India accounts for nearly 18 % of the global population but approximately 28 % of global suicides. Similar to many countries around the world, suicide in India is known to result from a complex interplay of social, economic, and personal factors.

To address this important issue, India released its first national suicide prevention strategy in 2022. The strategy follows the WHO-recommended model of a multisectoral approach to suicide prevention, incorporating a mix of primary prevention interventions (focusing on whole populations), secondary prevention interventions (targeting ‘high-risk’ individuals), and tertiary prevention interventions (aimed at individuals affected by suicide).

Suicide prevention is a critical issue that demands our immediate attention and action. It’s time to take a stand and implement effective strategies that can save lives

The triennial theme for World Suicide Prevention Day for 2024-2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” with the call to action “Start the Conversation”. This theme aims to raise awareness about the importance of reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides. Changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support.

The call to action encourages everyone to start the conversation on suicide and suicide prevention. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a supportive and understanding society. By initiating these vital conversations, we can break down barriers, raise awareness, and create better cultures of support.

🫵Here’s something each one of us can do:

1️⃣ Raise Awareness: Educate us and others about the signs of mental health struggles. Knowledge is power and understanding the warning signs can make all the difference.
2️⃣ Encourage Open Conversations: Create safe spaces for individuals to share their feelings without judgment. Open dialogue can help break the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
3️⃣ Promote Support Systems: Whether through professional counseling or peer support groups, having access to resources is essential. Encourage those in need to reach out for help.
4️⃣ Develop Coping Mechanisms: Teach healthy coping strategies such as mindfulness, exercise, and creative outlets. These tools empower individuals to manage stress and emotional pain effectively.
5️⃣ Advocate for Policy Changes: Support initiatives that prioritize mental health funding, education, and services within communities.
🪖
Together, we can create an environment where individuals feel valued and supported. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼🤲
Let’s commit to being proactive in our approach to suicide prevention…….because every life matters.
